Supermodels Without Makeup

I think this stuff is so misleading. Everybody talks about retouching, but no one really talks about the difference between someone walking around with energy versus the still photo. Photography itself is very misleading. Not just in making people look good, but also in making people look bad....especially in this type of mugshot photo. I have met some of these people and they ooze beauty and vitality.

I don't think these photos better or more realistically represent these women than shots of them as models with makeup. Here, they all look a bit off, like their heads are slightly too big. Maybe it was taken with a wide angle lens??? What would be more interesting would be to see their snapshots off their Facebook pages. See them in action with their friends, in different lighting. That would be a more interesting insight into the "real"or "natural" them.

Love magazine recently posted this picture of Louis Vuitton's Fall-Winter 2010 show cast, featuring its 50 or so models (including Elle Macpherson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Bar Refaeli, Adriana Lima, Laetitia Casta, Lara Stone and Coco Rocha) without makeup--a veritable celebration of the fresh-faced look. I found this on The Huffingtom Post.

What Happened to Summer?

The weather had been mostly pretty pleasant lately (ignoring some rain). 2 weeks ago I had to get out the air conditioner! But last night, I walked home from the studio and it was pretty chilly. So I am posting a nice warm summer shot to help bring back that warmer weather. I am pretty confident it will work as I checked out the 10 day forecast. 80 degrees this weekend!

My friend Chloe in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Natural light with no reflectors. Shot on a Canon 20D with a 50mm lens. ISO 100, 1/1000 sec at F2

I am still experimenting with the photos. I made a makeshift contact sheet of some of the shots that caught my eye. Zero retouching, just some alteration of the coloring. Here is the link to the previous blog post with a few images from the same shoot.

Heartloom Spring Summer 2010

Here is a Spring Summer 2010 catalog I shot a few months ago that should just be in stores now. Heartloom is a great line. It kind of has a laid back West Coast feel with the elegance and structure of New York. Very wearable and at a good price point. Check their website for more information.

http://www.heartloom.com/

They ran the photos a little differently, but I felt this coloring was kind of cool. We had 2 fantastic models; Daniela Mirzac from Marilyn and Britni Stanwood from MC2. You have seen both models in what seems like every runway show, plus Daniela in D&G, Teen Vogue, Glamour (France, Romania), Elle (Italia, Japan), Marie Claire (Japan, Romania), D, A4 Magazines. You have seen Britni in campaigns for everything; D&G, Alberta Ferretti, YSL, Alice Roi, Alessandro Dell-Acqua, Givenchy, Kenzo, etc.

Fading Wonderland Editorial

This is a story from a few years back I shot with my photographer friend, Rinze Van Brug. It was for Aventura Magazine. Models were from Elite and you have seen the blond model, Shannon Rusbuldt, in another post on this blog. The other models are Maja and Joe.

Rinze also runs a different edit than the magazine and there is some background video on his blog.

Bishop of Seventh

I always really liked this shot I did for the clothing company Bishop of Seventh. The shoot is a couple years old, but I came across it today while looking for another shot. It was taken in Los Angeles. Check out their site. The clothes are great and their newest shoot looks cool (not mine though!).

The model is Michelle from Elite Models, LA. Natural light, shot with Hasselblad H3D and I think and 80mm lens.

Photo of the Day - Traci and Erin

Here are some shots I took a few years ago of Traci and Erin McQuatters of New York Models. Traci is out of the business and is in music production now. Erin you have seen for L'Oreal, Glamour, Cosmo, Converse, Juicy Couture and even one of the models for the book series Pretty Little Liars (character Emily Fields).

I always think this snapshot style has an added intimacy in that the lighting is the same as if anyone took a shot of their friend...so it brings you closer to being there. Then you add that to crazy beauty, and it brings you closer to a place that maybe you haven't been.

It has been too long for me to remember which camera I took these with. My guess is a Canon 2oD with a 50mm 1.4 lens. No idea the F-stop. I assume the shutter speed is around 1/125 so it could sync with the on camera flash.

Thanks

Lisa Ramos of AMNT for Me and Thee Clothing Catalog

Here is the rest of the new catalog I shot for Me and Thee Clothing from England that I promised last week. The Model is Lisa Ramos, who had a recent stint on America’s Next Top Model (AMNT) in cycle 13. The photos were shot in my studio in Manhattan with a Canon 5D MarkII and 85mm 1.2 lens and a 24-70mm 2.8 lens. Lighting by Profoto. The set was built by Nick Miscusi. Fashion Styling by Keith S. Washington and Makeup/Hair by Martha Friedlander. Lisa Ramos is with Basic Models

.

I know I also posted this last time, but of course this is not the first ANTM model that we have posted on the site. One of the most popular pages on the blog is cycle 1o winner, Whitney Thompson.

I also, recently posted models I had shot from Project Runway (link to models).
