Easy Sunday Night

I took it easy today. Did a mini shoot of close friends and their adorable little son and ordered some buffalo wings. Sandra and I caught about 40 minutes of the Meetles, an awesome Beatles cover band that plays the Times Square subway stop on weekends sometimes. If you haven't checked them out, it is well worth the buck or two.

Now we are watching Zoolander. I think Ben Stiller was the first celebrity I saw when I came to New York. I was randomly walking behind him by like 15 feet....must have been for like 5 little blocks and didn't realize. But people kept making Something About Mary comments; some straight forward, some witty/dumb. It looked like he had a drink drink in his had and just kept firing back pleasant or witty/dumb comments himself. It must be hard not to just be able to walk down the street anonymous. From 15 feet away, he seemed like a pretty cool guy.

I don't really have a Zoolander shot, but this mildly reminds me of male model's in the movie and the drink drink in Ben Stiller's hand. I guess that would be a fun way to waste some time: go though my archives and see if some male model over the years has a Blue Steel expression in one of the shots.

The photo was originally part of an editorial I shot for a magazine, years and years ago.

More Svenja Parotat

I posted a photo of Svenja Parotat back on May 9th. She is a beautiful German model I photographed from Elite Models last year. I thought I would post a few more. You have seen her on the cover of Elle, Madame Figaro, New York Magazine, and Ads for Escada, La Perla and Clariol. There is a really sexy series of her from Ellen Von Unwerth.

There is no retouching on these, so you can tell just how naturally beautiful Svenja is. I think I shot it with my Canon 5D Mark II and my 85mm 1.2 lens.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge is one of my favorite places in the world. Here are 2 shots of it from DUMBO in Brooklyn back in 2006. It was just a lazy day and I went out to sit on the rocks with my love.

No tricks - straight off the camera. I think I was shooting into the Sun and just under exposed the shots to give it the look. Shot on Canon 1/640 sec at F9 ISO 100.

The Uniform Project

I just caught this story on CNN about a young woman, Sheena Matheiken, promoting sustainable fashion while collecting money for charity. Called The Uniform Project, she is wearing the same dress for 365 days but dressing it up differently with stockings, shoes, accessories. She has done a great job.

Here is the link to the CNN article:

DJ Kiss for 944 Magaine

I wanted to post a shot I did for DJ Kiss a couple months back that ran in 944 Magazine. She is really blowing up and traveling worldwide to spin. I know she has a bunch of high profile clients. I will try to post more of our shots in the next couple weeks. You can see more of her at her Facebook Fan page or at her blog page.

Of course, this is the first time my work appeared in 944 Magazine. Here is a link to a cover I had with them a few years a go.

Forbes' list of Top-Earning Fashion Models

I found Forbes' list of Top-Earning Fashion Models. No surprise that Giselle tops it at $25 million. Heidi Klum, Kate Moss, Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes, Alessandra Ambrosio, Natalia Vodianova, Daria Werbowy, Miranda Kerr, and Carolyn Murphy also made the list.

Here is the list on Huffington Post:

President Obama's Motorcade

I was walking over Brooklyn Bridge this evening and saw the coolest thing; President Obama's Motorcade. Really impressive. I don't want to give any details or post a photo. You know, "Loose Lips Sink Ships" (the World War II slogan). But suffice it to say, the coordination between agencies and the manpower.... it gives you a certain sense of security and national pride. It was 100 times what I thought it would be.

It actually reminds me a little of a photo job I had during the Bush Administration when I went to meetings at the US Mission to the UN and to the UN with Congressional Aides. You watch the news, and hear all the stupid talking points every day; the ridiculous comments on both sides. But then you listen to the career diplomats describe in detail the inner workings, the strategies, the blockages, and you are stunned that there are actually smart people behind the scenes. It was really cool. I know it doesn't always work that way, and sometimes the results of things makes you think it never works that way...but it was nice to see.

Thanks!

Mina Cvatkovic - Artist Rendering

I thought this was a lot of fun. It is a photograph of the famous model Mina Cvetkovic that I shot for the Susana Monaco campaign. It has been rendered by the graphic artist, Jared Nickerson.

The original photo was taken at Pier59 Studios in New York with My Hasselblad H3D 39 megapixel camera. ISO 50 at 1/180 sec at F8 and my 150mm portrait lens. Lighting was Profoto.

Mina has been one of my favorite subjects. You have seen her on this blog several times. The Fall 2009 Susana Monaco Campaign; Part 1 and Part 2. The Winter Holday 2008 Susana Monaco Campaign, plus the behind the scenes photos. Also, she has inspired many to draw her from my photos. Here is a link to some of mine and Susan Monaco's shots Vault49 illustrated of Mina.

Miss USA - Too Hot Or Just Right?

This is a great story about one of my colleagues, Fadil Berisha. Top photographer who often works with some of the same crew I do. I first caught it on Huffington Post and then on Fox (Click on the publication to go directly to their stories and all the photos). Huffington Post asks, "Too Hot Or Just Right?". Fox asks an interesting question as to whether these photos are racier than the photos that got Carrie Prejean in trouble. Not sure, but it is a good point. Either way though, the shots are hot.

I think Fadil did an amazing job on the photos. I see pageant photos every year and wonder why they don't look like these.

Photo of the Day - Svenja Parotat

I thought I would post a quick shot of a beautiful German model I photographed from Elite Models last year. This image is 100% un-retouched, so you can see Svenja is just naturally sexy. You have seen her on the cover of Elle, Madame Figaro, New York Magazine, and Ads for Escada, La Perla and Clariol. There is a really sexy series of her from Ellen Von Unwerth.

I used a Canon 5D Mark II with an 85mm 1.2 lens. I do not have my settings in front of me, but I expect it is around ISO 800 and F2.0. The only light is from the window behind and it bouncing around the room.

More Menswear

I posted some menswear the other day, so I thought I would continue. This is an old story I shot for a magazine a few years ago.

The model is John Moll and it was styled by Keith S. Washington. I shot this is Brooklyn with a Canon 20D with a 50mm 1.4 lens. ISO 400 1/60 sec at F2.8.

Prabal Gurung and Michelle Obama

Sometimes in this business you get really proud to see the success of your friends around you. Prabal Gurung is a true talent. It is no surprise his line is doing so amazingly well. But this week he hit another landmark achievement; dressing Michelle Obama for the White House Correspondent's Dinner.

I was lucky enough to meet Prabal years ago. One of his first collections was one of my first campaign shoots I ever did. It was a beautiful shoot, but so old and we have both grown so much that it is hard to look that far back, but I can still remember the shoot. We also worked together a couple years later on a mutual friends line, Number: Lab. And then again, he hired me to shoot for him at Bill Blass.

I watched the dinner on TV and thought Michelle looked stunning. I had no idea Prabal dressed her until I read about it on the Huffington Post.

Here is an excerpt from the Huffington Post article.

Prabal Gurung was riding in a cab with two friends heading to a party when he found out that First Lady Michelle Obama stepped out to the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in a red, draped dress designed by Gurung himself.

"I got a text, and an email, and an email, and then emails and I was like, holy cow," Gurung told The Huffington Post. "So I called one of my coworkers and I asked him to go online and check and he started screaming."

Gurung knew Michelle had the gown hanging in her wardrobe but he wasn't sure when she would wear it.

"I was really hoping [she'd wear it to the dinner]," Gurung confessed. "I made it, and I made it the best way I could and I sent it out to her....Red is my favorite color, and I was thinking about her and she's worn different kinds of styles. She's worn strapless. She's worn bigger skirts. The way this matte jersey is draped and hand stitched--and you haven't seen the back part of the gown--is incredibly beautiful. When I was doing it, I thought it would perfectly enhance the type of woman she is. It's modern, not vulgar, very chic, very beautiful."

Oumlil - Menswear

Here is a shoot from a while back that I did with my friend, Rinze Van Brug. Check his photo blog here.

The shoot was for menswear designer, Oumlil. A beautifully tailored line. I personally wear a couple his shirts.

The photos were taken with Hasselblad H2D 39 megapixel camera with 100mm lens set at F2.2. The ISO varied between 200 and 400. Light was a mix of ambient light and modeling lights from strobes.

Thanks
